A Career in Medical Transcription

If you are looking to switch careers, you might think about becoming a medical transcriptionist. This is somebody who interprets And transcribes dictation by healthcare professionals. There’s lots of benefits to a career in this field. For example, you can, in plenty of cases, work out of your own residence at your own pace. Also, the demand for jobs is high right now, provided you know what you are doing. Most professionals seeking out a transcription service prefer somebody who has been through training at a community college or trade school And has some work experience.

Besides the proper training, you’ll require the proper equipment. Since a medical transcriptionist listens to dictated information using a recording gizmo And headset, you’ll require to buy this stuff. A foot peddle is also necessary to start And cease the recording gizmo And the information you collect will must be entered onto a computer or word processor.

You will also require medical And pharmaceutical directories since you’ll be expected to know the proper terminology. If any words or phrases are unfamiliar to you, it will be your responsibility to look them up in one of the aforementioned reference books. You ought to know the principles of basic grammar And be able to spell check And proof read your own work. Since you’ll be transcribing dictated information, you’ll also require to be a lovely listener.

Whether you are working through a medical transcription service or by yourself as an independent contractor, the type of clients you have will probably include doctor’s offices, hospitals, free clinics And rehab centers. You’ll be transcribing any number of documents including patient histories, post-mortem reports, referral letters, consultation reports And other medical records.

If you are interested in becoming a medical transcriptionist, you must first get the proper schooling. Courses in this field are available at colleges, trade schools And even online. Most programs take about six years And some need you to work an internship at a medical facility. Further information regarding a career in this rewarding field can be gathered at the library or on the Web. Lovely luck!

The Modern Medical Science

The history of Medical Science is fascinating. Centuries before the advent of Islam the Arabs had their own technique of medicine in the type of herbs And shrubs (‘Aqaqir wa’l Hashä’ish) which was based on Chaldean medicine And on their own experience. Their first physician was Luqmân And the second Khuzaim. Gradually, Greek medicine attracted their attention. Harith Ibn Kaldah was the first to introduce Greek medicine to the Arabs.

After that some books began to be written on the subject. Tiazauq composed a few treatises on pharmacology, And Khalid Ibn Yazid Ibn Mu’awiyah got some Greek And Egyptian books translated in to Arabic. This was the condition in the coursework of the rule of Banu ‘Umayyah. But the science of medicine flourished in the coursework of the reign of the ‘Abbasis.1

At first the Muslims made arrangements for the translation of Greek, Indian, Persian And Chaldean medical works in to Arabic, And thus gained the knowledge of the medical systems of these nations. But they did not accept as such what these systems had offered. They made researches in various branches of the medical science, And accepted what was found to be useful. Besides, they made lots of valuable new discoveries in the theory And practice of medicine.

Then, combining their discoveries And the material sorted out of these systems, they evolved an entirely new technique of medicine. When the Europeans learnt this technique from the Muslims, usually through the Arabic medical literature, they properly called it Arabian Medicine, acknowledging on the one hand their indebtedness to the Muslims, And on the other putting a seal of testimony to the large And original contributions of the Muslim scientists to medicine.

Since the medical knowledge was primarily borrowed from the Greeks, the new technique was named by the Muslims of the South Asian Sub-Continent Tibb-e-Yunãni(Greek Medicine). This act gives a proof of the Muslim spirit of liberalism. When the Muslim world was producing most distinguished medical theoreticians And practitioners in history, the state of medicine in Europe was poor.

The Muslims who came in contact with Frank physicians in the coursework of the Crusades expressed much scorn for their ignorance And barbaric practices. Thabit, a Christian physician of the Syrian prince Usãmah, observed four cases (C. 1140) ending fatally on account of the barbarous surgical procedure of a Frank. The study of Islamic medicine was made for hundreds of years in all the Western countries, in France, And the Arabic medical writings formed the core of the European medical literature.

Until the 17th century these writings were included in the syllabi of the European universities. In France the Arabian Medicine was studied from 1410 to 1789. In Vienna in 1520, And, in Frankfurt on the Order in 1588, the medical curriculum was still largely based on Ibn Sinä’s ‘Qãnun’ And on the ninth book of al-Rãzi’s ‘Al-Mansuri.’ The introduction of this science in to Europe is an fascinating chapter of history.

According to Dr. Robert Briffault, an eminent western scholar, the Allopathic technique of medicine is the finish result of Arabian Medicine. They remarks:

“The Pharmacopoeia created by the Arabs is virtually that which but for the recent synthetic And organotherapic preparations, is in use at present day; our common drugs, such as Nux vomica, Senna, rhubarb, aconite, gentian, myrrh, calomel, And the structure of our prescriptions, belong to Arabic Medicine”

They also discloses that the medical schools of Montpellier, Padua And Pisa were founded on the pattern of that of Cordova under Jew doctors trained in Arab schools, And the Qãnün of Ibn Sina And the Surgical procedure of Abu’l-Qasim al-Zahrawi, remained the text books of medical science throughout Europe until the seventeenth century.

The Arabs had a fair knowledge of anatomy as it is clear from the names of the internal And outside organs of the human And animal bodies, present in the literature of the pre-Islamic Arabia. When they became acquainted with the Greek anatomical descriptions, they made investigations on them, pointed out lots of errors in the work of their predecessors, And made lots of fresh discoveries in this field.

2 In order to confirm the Greek anatomical ideas prevailing at that time Yuhanna Ibn Mäsawaih made dissection of the apes which were supplied to him by the order of the ‘Abbasi Caliph Mutasim Billah. After this verification they composed his work on anatomy. The works of some Muslim physicians And surgeons, like Tashrih al-Mansuri by Mansur Ibn Muhammad contain illustrations of human organs, which are not present in the Greek works. These illustrations also throw light on the Muslims’ practical knowledge of anatomy.
3 In opposition to Galen who thought that the human cranium consisted of six bones, the Muslim students held that it had four. They believed that there were ossicles in the ear, which facilitate the hearing capacity.

4 The work of the Muslim physicians in the field of physiology, , is valuable. For example, Ibn Nafis al-Qarshi of Damascus explained the theory of the minor circulation of blood four centuries before William Harvey to whom this discovery is ascribed. Al-Qarshi also suggested that food is fuel for the maintenance of the body’s heat. Abu’l-Faraj held that there’s canals in the nerves through which sensations And movements are transmitted.

The contributions of Muslims in the field of bacteriology are revolutionary. According to Browne, Muslims were fully aware of the theory of germs. Ibn Sinã was the first to state that bodily secretion is contaminated by foul foreign earthly bodies before getting the infection. Ibn Khätimah of the 14th century said that man is surrounded by minute bodies which enter the human body And cause disease. In the same century when the great plague devastated the world, And the chief causes of it, based on superstition, were said to be either the Jews or volcanic eruptions or the birth of a calf with four heads, four Muslim doctors, Ibn Khatib (1313-1374) And Ibn Khätimah (1323-1369), wrote on it treatises which were based on scientific observations.

5 Some Muslims also gave new suggestions regarding the treatment of diseases. In this connection Abu’1 Hasan, the physician of Adud al-Daulah introduced the technique of bleeding as a treatment of cerebral hemorrhage which is often due to blood pressure. Al-Razi suggested nourishing food for the treatment of general weakness. The Muslim physicians were the first to make use of the stomach tube for the performance of gastric lavage in the case of gas poisoning.

They were fully aware of the principles of opotherapy centuries before Browne Sequard to whom this technique of treatment is ascribed. Said Ibn Bishr Ibn ‘Abdus suggested light food And chilled producing medicines for the treatment of general paralysis And facial paralysis. Ibn al-Wãfid gave emphasis on the treatment of diseases through food control. They found the treatment for epidemic jaundice, And suggested a reasonable quantity of opium as a treatment of mania. For epistaxis they suggested the pouring of chilled water on the head.

6 The investigations of Muslim physicians on the causes, signs And effects of some diseases are highly exceptional. Al-Razi was they first physician to differentiate between smallpox And measles. His Greek, Indian And other predecessors were unable to differentiate between these four diseases. Abu’l-Hasan al-Tabari was the first to regard tuberculosis as an infiltration, And said that it affects not only the lungs but also the other organs.

The Bright’s disease, the discovery of which is ascribed to Dr. Richard Bright of the 18th century, was in fact discovered by Najib al-Din al-Samarqandi centuries before him.

7 In the science of surgical procedure, , much advancement was made by Muslims. They introduced the cauterizing agents in surgical procedure. They were the first to apply the technique of cooling to cease the haemorrhage, And to start the suturing of wounds with silken threads. Ibn Zuhr (11th century) gave a complete description of operation of tracheotomy, which was not mentioned by the Greeks. Abu’l-Qasim al-Zahrawi invented lots of surgical instruments illustrated in his book ‘al-Tasrif’. In the same book they described the methods of operations for various diseases.

While describing the operations of cranium And its parts, the Muslim surgeons made a mention of the operation of uvula And nasal polynus. They used the technique of tonsillectomy And paracentesis of the drum of the ear. They were also the first to perform the operation of peritoneal cavity, And to make use of the technique of Trocar And Canula for the special drainage. They made use of anesthetic substances in surgical procedure. While performing major operations they kept their patients unconscious for long time, sometimes even for days.

8 The Muslim opticians did valuable And original work in the treatment of eye diseases And in the surgical procedure of the eye. All the operations of the eye which are performed these days were performed by the Muslim surgeons of Mediaeval Ages. The technique of the operation of cataract was first described by them. They knew that cataract was due to the incapacity of the eye lens. Ibn al-Haitham described the structure of the eye. They gave the revolutionary ideas as regards the mechanism of sight, And described various types of lenses. Later on these descriptions served as the basis for the invention of spectacles used as a treatment for such eye diseases as short-sightedness And long-sightedness. The Muslims wrote valuable books on the treatment of eye diseases.

The art of midwifery was highly developed by Muslims. In this connection Abu’l-Qasim al-Zahrawi was the first to describe the Walcher’s position. They invented the technique of Cranioclasty for the delivery of dead foetus And they himself applied it. A book entitled Al-Athär al-Bãqiyyah in the University of Edinburgh contains an illustration showing an Arab physician performing Caeserian operation. A considerable number of new drugs And therapeutic agents were discovered by Muslims, And lots of herbs those of India were included in their practice. The pharmacology of rhubarb, senna And camphor was discovered, And hyoscyamus was used by them for medical purposes.

The Muslims introduced pharmacopoeia in medical science. Ibn Sahl was the first to write a book on pharmacopoeia. The recipes contained in the writings of Da’ud al-Antaki (16th century) And others were adopted by European druggists. Arabian pharmacology survived in Europe until the beginning of the 19th century. A quantity of the original Arabic or Persian names of some drugs And chemicals, such as syrup from the Arabic word Sharab, rab’ for a specific mixture of honey And fruit juice, And julep from the Persian word julläb’ (a specific aromatic drink) were included in European languages.

The Muslims wrote books on those branches of medical science on which their predecessors did not. Among such books Yühann Ibn Maswaih’s book on leprosy, Al-Razi’s books on smallpox And measles, Abü Müsä Ibn ‘Isã’s book on piles, And Qusta Ibn Luqa’s book on sudden death are highly valuable.

From the time of the Banu Umayyah rule the Muslims developed the institution of hospitals. In the coursework of the reign of the ‘Abbasi Caliph Harün al- Rashid, a hospital was built in Baghdad, which was the first in the history of this city. Lots of new hospitals were established soon afterwards. A quantity of them had their own gardens in which the medicinal plants were cultivated. The giant hospitals had medical schools attached to them. Beside such hospitals there were a giant number of travelling hospitals in the Muslim world.

9The Muslim hospitals served as models for the hospitals established in different parts of Europe in France And France. The establishment of hospitals throughout Europe in the 14th century was partly due to the influence of Crusades. The first hospital in Paris, Quinze Vingt, was set up by Louis IX after his return from the Crusades of 1254-60. The Crusaders were inspired by the magnificent hospitals (Bimaris-tans) of the Seljüq ruler Nur al-Din in Damascus, And those of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Mansur Qala’un in Cairo.

Practical schooling was imparted to Muslim medical students in the hospitals. It is said that there as no arrangement for such schooling in Alexandria before the Muslim period. According to Al-Razi, a physician had to, satisfy four conditions for choice: first, they ought to be well versed in new And elderly medical literature, And secondly, they must have worked in hospitals as a house surgeon.

10 The second ‘Abbãsi Caliph Al-Mansür called to Baghdad from Jundishapur a Christian physician of Persian origin, named Jarjis Ibn Bakhtyishu who remained in charge of the hospital of that city until 765-6. His arrival at Baghdad with four of his pupils marked the beginning of a great activity in the field of medicine. They appears to be the earliest member of the famous Bakhtyishu relatives of medical practitioners.

This relatives remained attached to the court of a considerable number of ‘Abbãsi caliphs, And exerted a great influence on the progress of Muslim medicine in the eighth And ninth centuries. Jarjis is said to have been the first to translate some medical works in to Arabic. The translations were made by the order of the Caliph.

11 In the ninth century of the Christian period the greatest medical activity was shown by the Arabic speaking peoples. Much activity was dedicated to translating the Greek medical works in to Syrian And in to Arabic. All the translators were Christians. One of them, Ibn-Sahda translated some works of Hippocrates in to Arabic. Jibril Ibn Bakhtyishu (d. 828-29) patronized the translators, And worked hard to get Greek medical texts. They also wrote some medical works of his own. They made a great contribution to the progress of science in Baghdad. They was the most prominent member of the Bakhtyishu relatives. A Christian Physician, Salmawaih Ibn Bunan. (d. 839-40) helped Hunáin to translate Galen’s medical works. Salmawaih showed that the use of aphrodisiacs, so common in the East, was hazardous. They flourished under Al-Mä’mün. Later they became physician in ordinary to Al-Mutasim.

12 Another translator, Ibn Masawaih (d. 857) translated various Greek medical works in to Syrian. His own medical writings were in Arabic. His treatise on ophthalmology called Daghal al‘Ayn (disorder of the eye) is the earliest work extant in Arabic on the subject.

13 Another important translator of Greek medical works in to Arabic was Ayyub al-Ruhawi, a contemporary of the ‘Abbasi Caliphs Al-Mutawakkil And Al-Mu’tazz (d.869). The translation of 35 works of Galen, a Greek physician, is ascribed to him.

14 As far as the physicians of the ninth century ate concerned, an important one was Abu’l-Hasan ‘Ali Ibn Sahl Ibn Rabban al-Tabari. They was as well as a physicist, And had knowledge of the Bible. They was born in Tabaristan where they was brought up. They belonged to a Jewish relatives, but they accepted Islam at the hand of the ‘Abbsi Caliph Al-M

As a professional medical transcriptionist, the ability to spell is crucial to your success. Spelling errors will hold you back in terms of raises, And also in getting your work completed in a timely And efficient manner.

Do you know the difference between “their”, “there” And “they’re”? How about “effect” And “affect”, or “its” And “it’s”? Plenty of people don’t catch the differences between these words when they see them, but your editor will, you can bet on it.

A spell check program will help you a great deal, but it won’t catch the situations above, And there will be plenty of words or phrases not included which are unique to the medical field. Even a medical spell check program won’t include every word you come across.
The medical field changes every day And you must take the responsibility to keep your skills up. Again, you must know when to override the spell check program’s recommendations.

And do not depend on the doctor’s spelling. They will often not know they have no idea the proper spelling of a word. They will often make up their own words, words that become a part of their vernacular And you must select the appropriate And consistent way to spell this word or phrase. Often the other doctors who work with this person will pick this term up And start using it as well. Soon it is in hospital-wide use And is fundamentally a made-up word.

Until you can transcribe a document in which there’s no spelling errors, you will never advance out of having your work checked through the quality assurance (QA) department. And until you advance out of QA, you won’t reach your full earning potential.

This cannot be stressed : You must have excellent spelling skills. In case you feel you are lacking in this department, contact your local school district or community college for adult continuing schooling classes to help with weak spelling skills. The classes may be free or have a nominal fee attached. In case you feel you cannot afford this, the library is also an excellent resource.

One device that can be of great assistance to you is a shorthand program. Most word processors these days come with a built-in autocorrect feature that you can add those long medical terms to, And also shortcuts for whole phrases And sentences that physicians tend to make use of over And over. This one device will save you tons of headaches with spelling, And increase your production level substantially as well.

The bottom line is, spell checkers And shorthand programs will help you out, but you need to learn to spell in case you are going to be a top flight transcriptionist And earn the top dollars in this profession.

What to Know Before You Ask a Medical Question Online

The World Wide Web is thought about to be a huge library, rich with both elderly and new information. What’s more, because it’s also simple for you to communicate with countless people all over the world, sometimes all you need is to ask a query to get an exact reply immediately.

However, there’s also lots of information that are not are not true, and there’s lots of individuals who will feed you with misleading or wrong information. Thus, before you choose to ask a medical query, for example, you need to keep in mind the following tips. Unless you learn to follow them, you will seldom be able to ask health questions properly or even get the right answers:

How does the world wide website look like?

The first thing you need to evaluate before you ask a medical query is the appearance of the world wide website. Normally, somebody who is out there to scam would not spend lots of time coming up with a well-designed and useful website. You also must confirm if it’s lots of lovely pages inside. They will become handy later on.

What kind of information are they providing?

Another thing you need to keep in mind before you ask health questions will be the type of information given to you by the world wide website itself. Since not all can determining whether medical information is right or wrong, you can try to check out an analysis of a common disease, for example, as a start. You can perhaps read about colds and take note of the information available. Are they the same ones you listen to when you talk ask a medical query to your doctor, or do you feel that something is amiss? A common rule when dealing with these types of situations is actually simple. When in doubt, don’t.

Have they got medical specialists?

It’s important that when you ask health questions, they must even be answered by medical specialists. This doesn’t mean that you ought to not listen to others, those who have gone through the disease themselves. However, you ought to also learn to acknowledge that doctors have the actual authority to speak about medical conditions and answer a medical query. After all, along with your health, you can’t depend on opinion or theories. What you need is facts.

What kinds of specialists they have?

They may have doctors, what kinds of doctors have they got? For somebody who desires to ask a medical query, this tip may not be important. However, in case you need to makes definite that you will get honest-to-goodness answers when you ask health questions, then you ought to. For example, in case you have an inquiry about your baby’s health, you ought to hope that a pediatrician will be the one to answer it since he’s better knowledge and excellent expertise on it. It’s also the same thing when you have questions about cancer, mental health, and reproductive system, to name a few.

Our Nation’s Capital

Washington DC is the capital of the United States of The united states. When in a brand spanking new area, they find it beneficial to get the lay of the land. They knew were not going to try to drive in to Washington, DC with Boss.(Keep in mind that Boss is a one ton dually with an extended bed And wide hips. Finding a parking place is difficult. They have heard the horror tales of the Beltway, not to mention the traffic in DC proper. The beltway is an Interstate highway method, which encircles the city: widely known for major traffic jams.

They discovered that DC has a amazing Metro, train/subway, method which will take the traveler anywhere in the general area. First they had to find the stations near us And check out the parking. The station at College Park is convenient, but has a postage stamp parking zone. Mostly students from the University of Maryland use this depot by their shuttle bus. The other station, the terminus of the Green line is Greenbelt, the planned city built after W.W.II. The parking zone there has its own shuttle bus to assist the patrons from the far reaches of the lot.

Nearby is Greenbelt Park, a hidden gem in the National Park Service. Although the park is officially closed at this time, dry camping is still allowed in one of the areas for only .00 per night (half for Seniors with the Golden Passport). A dump station is obtainable for the necessary. The campground is less than a half mile from the College Park train station.
Our aim today was to scale the Washington Monument for the aerial view of the city And then visit the Lincoln And Jefferson Memorials. To enter the Washington Monument, you need to have a ticket, picked up free at a nearby kiosk. To receive a ticket you need to be there by 8:00 AM. They arrived about 11:00 And all were taken.

They headed to the Lincoln Memorial by the Vietnam Wall, a moving sight with the flowers, wreaths, And letters laid at the base of the monument. At the South finish are two books with the names of the dead in alphabetical order. The names on the memorial are chronological. Look up the name of the individual in the book And you will be directed to the panel on which his/her name appears. Across a little green are two more memorials dedicated to the survivors of the war: one of three soldiers, the other of the ladies who served.

What can be said about the Lincoln Memorial which has not been done before. These days barricades And fencing restrict the tourists’ movements. You cannot walk around the Memorial on the upper level. On the ground floor, however, is a museum which chronicles the construction of the Memorial And the events which have taken place at the site, such as the freedom marches, Marion Anderson’s concert, And Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a Dream” speech.

Two times again the NPS has scored with a amazing film relating the importance of Abe Lincoln’s life through his words And pics And the impact throughout the history of our great country. The musical background is Aaron Copeland’s Lincoln Portrait.

Down from the Lincoln Memorial, opposite the Mall from the Viet Nam Memorial, is the Korean War Memorial. Make sure you have a ranger tour to derive the utmost from the experience. The purpose of the memorial is to involve everyone, the living And dead, in to the experience. Originally there were to be thirty-eight(re: 38th Parallel) life-sized statues of soldiers climbing the rugged hill to freedom. The number was halved to nineteen.

Approaching from the road the one soldier is looking over his shoulder signaling to the troops massed in the woods behind to come out in to the clearing, filled with juniper And rocks. As you climb the hill to the US flag, the symbol of freedom, you see at the finish etched in stone that over 53,000 men lost their lives And over 8,000 were MIA. At the top is a reflecting pool with a triangular wall jutting in to it (the Korean Peninsula). Not to be overlooked is the dark wall on the other side of the hill. In to the wall are carved 2,500 photographic images of men And ladies who were ancillary to the combatants.

You cannot see the faces from afar, only up close. Drawing near the wall the actual faces can be seen staring out at you, And you yourself are also reflected in the wall along with the nineteen soldiers climbing the hill to freedom. You become part of the memorial And memorial becomes part of you. This is an eerily haunting feeling which lingers throughout the day.

Across the road to the tidal basin they walked. The thousands of Japanese Cherry Trees were in full bloom. In the distance stood the Jefferson And the Washington Memorials. Along the way lays the memorial to Franklin D. Roosevelt. This consists of three outdoor rooms of writings, water And statuary, each one dedicated to a term in office. The monument is a lovely tribute to a great president who led us out of the despair of depression And the horrors of war. The tribute pales compared to what they had experienced earlier.

The Jefferson Memorial is another on the must see list in Washington DC. Dedicated to reason And enlightenment, this makes a fitting finish to an emotion filled day.

Some impressions of Washington And Washingtonians. The city looks like New york in the summertime: construction in every single place you look; cranes, chain link fencing, barricades. Police presence where ever you look: on foot, in cars, on bicycles, motorcycles And horses. Joggers, I mean plenty of joggers, not a few pass by no matter where you are; in the park, on the tidal basin paths, on the street. People out in great numbers, either seeing the sights in little groups or gigantic tours, or individually. A calliope of people, scents, sights, And sounds fill every pore of the body.

The early bird catches the worm, or breakfast with our Senators. Every Thursday morning at 8:30, while Congress is in session Senators Dick Durbin And Peter Fitzgerald hold a continental breakfast with their constituents in one of the subcommittee rooms in the Dirkson Building. They were also given passes to the Senate And House of Rep galleries. Check together with your Senators, in the event that they do the same.
A tour of the Capital is given only by Senate or House personnel. You need to know anyone to visit your building. What has our country come to when you cannot even visit your capital building? Fortunately they had gallery passes.

Our first cease was the Senate. What a marvelous place to see government in action.. They were disappointed by the paucity of gallery occupants. Less than ten percent of the gallery was full. The ones who came in were mostly school groups. Granted no earth shaking votes were being taken, but they heard Sen. Barbara Boxer of CA argue for an amendment to add antiterrorist devices to commercial airlines. This was supported by Sen. Evan Bayh from IN who also spoke. Sen.

John McCain of AZ spoke in rebuttal. Sen. Kennedy came in to the Chambers later. Every hour the President Pro Temp of the Senate changes. Every fifteen minutes, the court reporters rotate. What is missing is modern electronics. There’s no tote boards, cell rings. The only computers they saw were one on the secretary’s table And the ones operating the TV cameras.

From the Senate to the House of Representatives. Whereas the Senators had individual desks And chairs, the Reps. sit in pew like seats with dividers between them. They have no desks. In the event that they require to speak , they must go to one of the tables on either side of the middle aisle And be recognized. One representative was giving a speech about bringing the troops home from Iraq. They finally withdrew his amendment, but got his anti-war point recorded in the Congressional Record.

Went to the Rayburn Building, where our Representative, Jesse Jackson, Jr. has his office. They still vote in New york And keep up with the local politics. They was out of the office, but his tiny daughter, Jessica, was in charge And had the staff walking around looking for a lost soccer ball. His staff is in technique of setting up a tour of the Capital for us.

To complete our day on “The Hill”, they visited the Supreme Court. They were not hearing any cases that afternoon. So they could visit the courtroom And receive a lecture (tour) of the building. When they are in session, you need to get in to line early to listen to each case. When all of the seats are taken the remainder of those in line are allowed to sit on wooden chairs in the rear of the Chambers for three minute periods.

The plaintiff And defendant lawyers have one half hour to plead their case. Did you know that there is another court above the Supreme Courtroom? It is a basketball court. Both courts cannot be in session simultaneously.

They tried to see the Ford Theater, where President Lincoln was assassinated. The line was long for the guided lecture. They are not allowed to bring backpacks in to the theater. But after 12:00 you can go for a glance see inside for a couple of minutes. On our way to the theater they passed the new International Spy Museum. The cost of entry was slightly steep, .00 per senior. I was expecting to be disappointed And ripped off. Much to my surprise, I was neither.

The museum is high tech And delves in to the plenty of aspects of espionage, from Biblical time to modern surveillance devices And techniques. The museum is divided in to different sections with plenty of hands on activities. They spent over two hours there And could spend more time watching all of the videos And programs. Yes, Agent Maxwell Clever, they had your phone shoe . There were plenty of replicas from the chilled war, even the poison injecting umbrella.

Did you know that Julia Child was two times a spy? Perhaps that is how they got all of her recipes.Off to the Ford theater they went (only a block away). Lincoln saw part of “My American Cousin”. Today “1776″ was on stage. Unlike 40 years ago, Lincoln’s box is now off limits. A picture hangs in from of the bunting where Boothe caught his spur And thereby broke his leg.

The museum downstairs And the house across the street, where Lincoln died are closed for renovation,On the way to the department of the Interior, they passed by the Willard Hotel, a strikingly stunning building, where final negotiations were held to keep the Union united in 1861. They passed by the White House. Guess what—under construction—many blockages.

The closest anyone can see of the White House these days is by watching West Wing. Another stunning building is the Elderly Executive Office Building (one of the largest in Washington), next to the White House. This is also closed to the public. Fascinating is that on the other side of the White House is the Treasury, close for the President to keep an eye on the money.

Finally they made it to the Department of the Interior. The building is over two blocks long. Anne James gave us a amazing tour of the facility. There is a gigantic museum in the building depicting the history And various aspects of the department. The Interior was formed in 1849. The primary foci of it today are Land management And Indian Affairs. On the seventh floor is the elderly cafeteria with murals painted by artists from various Native American tribes. The windows give a stunning view of the city.

All of the government buildings are closed on Saturday. Off to the Smithsonian they went. Everything is free. The first museum they desired to see was the National Air And Space Museum. Get there early to keep away from the long lines. The museum is two floors tracing the history of flight And space exploration. Some of the original aircraft include Lindbergh’s Spirit of St Louis, Yeager’s Bell-1, Mercury, Gemini, And Apollo capsules, V-1 rockets, Steve Fossett’s balloon capsule, And plenty of others. The Enola Gay is in storage. Later this year the museum will open an addition near Dulles International Airport And display much more of its collection.

They had a short time to visit one of the lesser museums of the Smithsonian. Next door is the Hirshhorn Museum specializing in modern sculpture And paintings. The museum, itself is a work of art, circular in design with a stunning middle atrium with a fountain And surrounded on the outside with elegant sculptures. They had an exhibit of Gerhard Richter, an East French escapee. His paintings depict either a bad case of myopia or an unwillingness to say openly what they desired to say. Plenty of of his paintings are blurred, but photographic in nature. They loved the use of the color grey.

Today they planned as a day off. I had desired to do a tiny genealogical research. So I figured that today would be a lovely one to find out information about my relatives. The National Archives can be present in Washington DC And they have a branch in College Park, MD. Arriving at the Archives, NARA, I registered And received a photograph ID to do research. Sadly, all of the records I was seeking were at the downtown office. The gentleman said that there was a free shuttle bus, which runs every hour on the hour between the two facilities.

I believed my ears. Midday came And I hopped on the promised shuttle. I thought that this would take some time due to the horror tales of Washington DC traffic And the blockades in every single place.
